Innovative Use
Embodied energy is the energy used to create, manufacture, and deliver goods or materials to the consumer. In comparison to conventional materials, these materials will have significantly less embodied energy, especially when looking at the life span of these materials. Another benefit for year round growth is that in comparison to a garden, year round production will use 3-4 times more carbon dioxide. The final benefit is the materials used will result in a stable growing environment.
A good insulator.
The greenhouse will use locally sourced materials to reduce energy and monetary costs. To make this structure affordable and within reach of individuals and families. The use of unconventional materials is what will be used to insulate this structure and will make it immune to most extreme weather events. The proposed materials that form the wall and insulation have been in use for over a hundred years. |
Eyes that are durable.
Instead of glass, the greenhouse will use polycarbonate glazing. Working in conjunction with the passive solar design, poly carbonate glazing will act as a diffuser of light. The angle of the slope will optimize the light that enters the enclosure during the winter. This material is very durable and will last for 15-20 years. This material also will resist extreme weather events very well. |
Let there be light.

Conventional growing lights are very costly to operate. Were this program conceptualized 5 years ago this would not have gone forth were it not for Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The are very energy efficient and produce little heat. It is estimated that LED's have a 20 to 25 year lifespan.
