Aquaponics System

Aquaponics

The Aquaponics System combines Aquaculture and Hydroponics within a closed system.  This system mimics nature on a much smaller scale.  In essence, fish are fed and they expel waste.  This waste is broken down by bacteria into nutrients which feed the plants.  As a result, plants are grown in an almost symbiotic nature.  The only input is feed for the fish.  This system may seem complex but a little bit of training it will be simple to maintain.

The benefits of this system in comparison to conventional gardens is 90% less water usage, produces 3-4 times more vegetables, and is sustainable in terms of materials and work  power.  This system will not grow root vegetables well and would require novel components which would make it less efficient.

The marriage of Aquaculture and Hydroponics

Aquaculture is the growing of fish.  Fish commonly used within an Aquaponics system are Tilapia and Trout.  Tilapia is a hard fish which will eat mostly anything for feed.  Trout is a fish that is more able to survive our temperature ranges at our latitude.

Hydroponics is the growing of plants within a water medium, rather than soil.  With the exception of root vegetables, hydroponics will grow most vegetables.
