To provide a bit of context to the whole situation, globally, we are projected to reach 9.6 billion people on this planet, by 2050. In order to meet the current demand, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates we have to increase food production double at what we are currently producing. This is not sustainable.
In Canada, we experience food insecurity. Though the shelves of the supermarket are full, most of that produce is imported from foreign countries. In addition to this, it is estimated that families will pay out more money this year for food, to the tune of $420 for the average sized family. This makes us all vulnerable.
